Tag en rejäl mängd vapen. Tillsätt oförmåga att kommunicera och blanda ner ett rågat mått makt. Rör om. Denna potenta blandning är sedan länge ett pålitligt medel för att göra vem helst till brottsling. Till exempel en vanlig hederlig amerikansk sjukvårdare i 3rd Infantry Division:
”At the barbecue, I chat to Doc as he perches on the bonnet of his Ford Mustang, his six-year-old daughter sitting on his knee. He was awarded the Silver Star for using his body to shield a wounded soldier when the company was caught in an Iraqi counter-attack. For him, there is no longer a horror of violence. Instead, he seems to be revelling in the power that he enjoyed in Iraq.
’There was one time when we were on checkpoint, and this Iraqi came up to me, and he’s all ’ladiladiladi’. You know, shouting Arabic stuff,’ he says.
’I pushed him away, but he came back. So I touched my pistol, but he carried on talking. I pulled out the gun and held it to his nose, but still he keeps shouting. Then I pistol-whipped him, cut him across the cheek. That’s what I miss.’”

Genevekonventionen avseende skydd för civilpersoner i krig, artikel 3:
Persons taking no active part in the hostilities, including members of armed forces who have laid down their arms and those placed hors de combat by sickness, wounds, detention, or any other cause, shall in all circumstances be treated humanely, without any adverse distinction founded on race, colour, religion or faith, sex, birth or wealth, or any other similar criteria.
To this end, the following acts are and shall remain prohibited at any time and in any place whatsoever with respect to the above-mentioned persons:
- Violence to life and person, in particular murder of all kinds, mutilation, cruel treatment and torture;(…)
- Outrages upon personal dignity, in particular humiliating and degrading treatment;
Artikel 2 säger också att ”The Convention shall also apply to all cases of partial or total occupation…”
Vad jag funderar på är hur irakiern reagerade. Eller de anhöriga till kvinnan och barnen i den bil som senior medic James ”Doc” Swinney sköt ner i Bagdads utkanter. Vapen, oförmåga att kommunicera och maktlöshet är sedan länge ett pålitligt recept för att göra vem helst till terrorist – till exempel en vanlig hederlig irakier.
Och språkproblemen ger i sin tur ett övertag för terroristerna:
” ’It is very propitious for the terrorists,’ [one high-ranking U.N. official] said. ’The U.S. is now on the soil of an Arab country, a Muslim country, where the terrorists have all the advantages. They are fighting in a terrain which they know and the U.S. does not know, with cultural images the U.S. does not understand, and with a language the American soldiers do not speak. The troops can’t even read the street signs.’ ”

Om du inte redan gjort det, läs Dave Grossmans On Killing. Även Richard Rhodes Why They Kill är bra om man är intresserad av våld och dödande. Det räcker inte med vapen. Det krävs mycket träning för att av-humanisera vanliga människor så de blir bra på att döda andra.
