Det finns inget som tyder på att CD–försäljningen minskar för att musik finns fritt tillgänglig, skriver Janis Ian i artikeln The internet debacle– an alternative view Hon ger gott om exempel på motsatsen: gratisprover ökar försäljningen – av böcker såväl som skivor. Och hon har egen erfarenhet att backa upp det med.
I en uppföljningsartikel föreslår hon ett konkret experiment:
”All the record companies get together and build a single giant website, with everything in their catalogues that`s currently out of print available on it, and agree to experiment for one year. All the record companies agree that, for the sake of the experiment, and because these items are currently dead in the water anyway, they`re going to charge a more–than–reasonable price for each download.”
Janis Ians artikel har redan länkats till av mer än tusen sajter, översatts till nio språk (men inte svenska?).
